Connected Packaging: Turn Every Product into a Digital Experience

Connected packaging transforms physical products into digital touchpoints using GS1-compliant QR codes. When consumers scan, they access product information, recipes, sustainability data, loyalty programs, and more — while brands gain scan analytics, consumer insights, and anti-counterfeiting protection. Sprouter's platform starts at $500/month for up to 100 SKUs.

How Connected Packaging Works

Five steps from product catalog to live connected packaging with scan analytics.

1

Register Products

Import your product catalog with GTINs. Sprouter validates formats and verifies ownership via GEPIR.

2

Configure Content

Set up digital destinations for each product — product pages, recipes, sustainability data, loyalty programs.

3

Generate QR Codes

Generate GS1-compliant QR codes in print-ready formats. Add your brand logo and customize colors.

4

Apply to Packaging

Dual-mark your packaging with both linear and 2D barcodes. Sprouter provides placement guidelines.

5

Track & Optimize

Monitor scan analytics in real time. See which products, geographies, and content drive engagement.

Connected Packaging by Industry

Every industry benefits from turning static packaging into an interactive consumer channel.

Food & Beverage

Recipe links, ingredient sourcing, allergen data, and nutritional information. Consumers scan to discover how to use your product, where ingredients come from, and verify authenticity.

73% of consumers check product info before purchase

Cosmetics & Beauty

Ingredient transparency, usage tutorials, shade matching, and sustainability certifications. URI compression enables QR codes on small packaging like lipstick tubes.

Beauty brands see 3x engagement vs static labels

Wine & Spirits

Vineyard stories, tasting notes, food pairing suggestions, and provenance verification. Connected bottles create ongoing consumer relationships beyond the point of sale.

Connected wine labels drive 40% repeat purchases

Pharmaceuticals

Dosage instructions, drug interaction warnings, patient information leaflets, and serialized anti-counterfeiting. Meets EU FMD and FDA DSCSA requirements.

Serialization required for all Rx by 2027

Consumer Electronics

Setup guides, warranty registration, firmware updates, and troubleshooting. Reduce support costs by giving consumers instant access to device-specific help.

Support calls drop 35% with connected packaging

Luxury & Fashion

Authentication, provenance, care instructions, and resale verification. Protect brand value with three-layer anti-counterfeiting built into every product's QR code.

$467B counterfeit trade globally (OECD, 2021)

Connected Packaging FAQ

What is connected packaging?

Connected packaging uses QR codes, NFC tags, or other scannable elements on product packaging to link physical products to digital experiences — product information, recipes, sustainability data, loyalty programs, and authentication. Sprouter's platform creates GS1-compliant connected packaging that also works at POS.

How much does connected packaging cost?

Sprouter's Connected Packaging Starter plan begins at $500/month for up to 100 SKUs. Connected Packaging Pro is $1,500/month with anti-counterfeiting, Digital Product Passport, and up to 500 SKUs. Enterprise pricing is custom for 500+ SKUs.

Does connected packaging work with existing barcodes?

Yes. Sprouter's connected packaging uses the dual-marking approach — your existing linear barcode (EAN/UPC) stays on the package alongside a new 2D barcode (QR code). Both barcodes coexist during the transition period until retailers fully support 2D scanning at POS.

What data can consumers access by scanning?

Anything you configure: product information, ingredients, allergens, recipes, how-to videos, sustainability and sourcing data, loyalty rewards, warranty registration, recall notices, and Digital Product Passport data. Sprouter supports 55 configurable link types.
